In Praise of a Good Boy

Lobo Marunga
My sweet little boy cat Lobo died today. We have no idea what happened. About two weeks ago he started losing weight but we thought that was just in hair that came off in the bath. Then he stopped eating, he grew lethargic, and last night he started having spasms and didn’t have the strength to hold up his head. It just came out of nowhere.

Lobo came to us as a kitten the month before I had Atticus. The whole time Atti was in the hospital, Lobo would let me cradle him and pretend I was holding my baby. As soon as he heard that breast pump start whooshing, little Lobi would come running to sit in my lap and be my surrogate baby boy.

P1013493
As soon as Atti did come home, Lobo immediately adopted him. He played the role of big brother and best buddy, always keeping Atti company during tummy time, sniffing out any therapist that came to the house, and letting Atti endlessly pull out his whiskers and fur.

I’m one of those crazy cat people who believe that our pets have a spiritual mission of their own. They come to us to be little fuzzy helpers, to teach us lessons, to support us and give us comfort during the hardships of life.

A boy and his cat
Lobo was here to help Atti. He helped me get through that awful hospital stay, and since then he has been right by his boy every minute, even sleeping on the changing table while Atti slept in his crib. He would perch himself just out of reach, being the motivation for Atti to make his little body move. The therapists started calling him The Therapy Cat.

Partners in Crime
We’ve tried to have Atti play with some other kids his age, but it doesn’t really work. He can’t run or even sit up, he can’t defend himself while everyone is learning to share, the other kid gets bored because Atti can’t really interact, it’s just not working out yet. But Atti always had a playmate in Lobo.

I’m just wrecked over this. I know he was a cat, not a person, and this kind of thing happens, but it’s just such a loss in our family. We’re going to miss this little guy so very much. But he was just the best cat while we had him.

Best Weekend

Happy Mother's Day

What a wonderful way to spend a day. Snuggled up to my favorite little guy while my favorite big guy makes me breakfast in bed.

Mother's Day Breakfast
Homemade pastry with fresh whipped cream and strawberries. It was perfection. And I only had to fight Lobo off a little bit.

Wrestling
It wasn’t too long before our family snuggletime devolved into a wrestling match between two troublemaking little boys.

Then I opened my presents: A storybook from “Atticus” [wink wink], but in the back were two tickets to the very most awesome comedian Patton Oswalt; and jewelry from Bear. He way overdid, and I spent the whole rest of the day contemplating returning the gift in the name of fiscal responsibility, but that just seems too mean to go through with. Plus it’s shiny and pretty. And since Bear knows that I don’t like diamonds because of the political ramifications of the diamond trade, he found me a gorgeous set of earrings and necklace made out of white topaz. So now I can have my bling guilt free. Except for the whole money part of course.

It was a really great day. The only problem is that Bear has set the bar way too high for Father’s Day. Unless I come through with super bowl tickets, I think I’m screwed.

One less thing to do…

Last night Bear made dinner, so I found myself with an unexpected hour on my hands. I decided I’d finally do the task I was dreading the most, and give the stinky cat a bath.

I keep saying that Lobo helped prepare me for becoming a mom to a boy in many ways. I think he’s currently preparing me for the teenage years because this cat is greasy and stinky and refuses to clean up after himself. He is apparently content to be all nasty and matted instead of fluffy and pretty like my girl cats. I’m sure it doesn’t help much that Atti attacks him with drool at least once a day, but even without that he is one gross cat.
Lobo takes a bath

He was not very cooperative, but he wasn’t super uncooperative either. I managed to make it through the whole ordeal with only one scratch, and once he was good and soaked he stopped fighting and just cried his little eyes out.

Lobo the drowned rat

The main problem was his disgusting greasy tail. I washed him with baby soap, I washed him with dish soap, and when that still didn’t do the job I finally gave up and then asked google for advice. Turns out that this is a common condition with in tact male cats called “Stud Tail.” The only solution would be to either bath him weekly with degreaser and powder him afterwards, get him neutered, or live with it. So I have to deal with my teenage kids greasy hair. I’m sure it won’t be the last time.

Cheetara looks on in horror
The other kitties watched intently, terrified that they were next.

Snuggled up
The poor guy was freezing after the bath, and he certainly wasn’t going to go for a blow dryer, so we wrapped him up in a towel and cuddled him to keep him warm.

Puss in Boots
Have you ever seen a more pathetic face?

After this whole ordeal, I’m going to be a lot stricter about letting him roll around in the dirt outside. I really don’t want to make this a regular thing. The cuddling part wasn’t so bad though.

kitties making it better

The kitties have been very close as we’ve been learning to deal with Atti’s new diagnosis. I know how kooky this sounds, but I swear they know when they’re needed.

A boy and his cat

Our boy cat has completely adopted Atti. They always have tummy time together, Lobo sniffs out any new therapist that comes by the house, when Atti’s crying Lobo comes running.

And big fat Lobo is always around when it’s feeding time.
PA274645

Like a lot of preemies, Atti has some digestive issues. The other night his stomach was hurting him badly so we brought him into our bed to try to soothe him. Nothing we did worked, he was in pain and just couldn’t be comforted. So then Lobo hopped on the bed, laid himself down on Atti’s legs with his front paws extended onto his belly, and started kneading. It was the only thing that got Atti to feel better long enough to go to sleep.

The therapists call him the therapy cat. I’ll hold Lobo in front of Atti whenever we’re trying to get him to scoot or reach and Lobo will almost always just sit and take it.

Of course, sometimes he gets sick of it just like any other big brother.

The mother of all Tutorials

Months and months ago Bear and I worked together one weekend and we finally made a super deluxe kitty scratching post. So super fancy you couldn’t get one this decked out at any price. The kitties adore it, and I love it because they no longer attack my furniture. That was my one big fear in outfitting this place. That no sooner would we scrimp and save and buy the perfect couch, then it would be destroyed with one lazy kitty swipe.

Making it took a ton of work. So much work that just describing the work has sounded like too much work to bother with, but I’m super proud of this project and I think a tutorial would be really helpful, so I’m going to sack up and do it.

Here’s what you need:

P8062337 P8062339
2, 2×4’s cut to 4′ long
1, 2×4 cut to 5’8″ long
1, 2×4 cut to 2’6″ long
1, 2×4 cut to 1’6″ long
1 square of MDF 2’x2′
2, 2×4’s cut to 9″
1, 2×6 cut to 2’4″
1, 2×6 cut to 2’8″
1, 2×6 cut to about 9 1/2″
1, 1×2 cut to 4″
1, 10″ wide 4″ cardboard tube cut to 33″ long, with the remainder of the tube cut in half
5 L Braces
2 Bar braces
1 box 3″ screws
1 box #6 1″ screws
2 2″ screws
carpet – I ended up using a piece that was about 12’x6′

P8062343
Start with your square of MDF and the first five 2×4’s. The MDF is obviously your base, and you’ll put one 2×4 in each corner and one in the middle. Trace around the 2×4’s to mark your position. Each 2 x 4 should fit in the corner diagonally so they’ll be lined up once we start putting all the stuff on top of them. This is really super tall, so we’ll be trying to make this as stable as possible. You’re going to have to drill from the bottom of the MDF into the 2×4 using the 3″ screws.

P8062349
The 1’6″ 2×4 goes in the middle. You’ll install these 2×4’s from shortest to tallest, since you have to flip the base over and let the 2×4 support it. I used three of the 3″ screws.

The next piece of 2 x 4, 2’6″ long, goes in one of the corners. It should be perpendicular to the middle 2 x4. You don’t want the skinny sides lined up, fat side should be facing skinny side. Yes?

Then in the next corner, install one of the 4′ long 2×4’s, and the other diagonally across the base from it. These will support the tube between them across the diagonal of the base.

The last corner will be for the tallest piece. The 5’8″ 2×4 goes in the last corner, and should face your 2’6″ piece.

Oh gosh I hope this makes sense. This is the hardest part, I promise. Here’s a larger picture from when we were installing the longest piece and here you should be able to see the position of all the other posts.
P8062351

When you’re satisfied with the position of all your posts, go back and reinforce them with the L braces. I threw away the screws that came in the package, and used #6 1″ screws since I was sure they were short enough that they wouldn’t go through the bottom of the MDF.
P8102355

Next we start installing the support pieces. Your two 9″ 2×4’s will support the halfpipes on the tallest post and the shortest middle post. Line up the end of the 9″ piece with the back of the tall post facing towards the middle of the base and screw down into place using 3 of the 3″ screws. Do the same for the middle post, with the 9″ piece pointing towards one of the 4′ posts.

P8112397
Then install the 2’4″ 2×6 onto the shortest corner post. Line up the 2×6 so that it bumps into the tallest corner post. First screw into the top of the short corner post using 3 of the three inch screws, then screw through the back of the tall corner post (using 3 of the 3″ screws) to secure the other end in place.

P8102356
Next comes the support for the big cardboard tube. Install the 2’8″ 2×6 onto the top of each 4′ corner post by screwing down from the top of the 2×6 into the 2×4 using 3 of the 3″ screws. You might need to fudge a little bit depending on how you installed the posts, but everything will be covered in carpet anyway, so no need to worry.

I was making this up as I went along, and right about here I decided that the tallest post was still too wobbly. I happened to have a scrap piece of 2×6 laying around and cut it to stick in between the crosspiece and the tall post, which for me was about 9 1/2″. Luckily there is a lot of give here, so precision isn’t a requirement. I used the same three 3″ screws and went through the back of the tallest post, and then used bar braces to connect the support piece to the cross piece.
P8112403

One last piece of wood to screw into place. I designed this so that the lowest halfpipe is supposed to connect to the post it’s nearest. So I needed to create a way for the halfpipe to do that. Screw your little piece of 1×2 onto the corner post your lowest little platform is facing. I used the 2 2″ screws here because you still need to be concerned about the screws poking out the back but also want a nice strong hold.
P8112394

You then take one of your cardboard half pipes and then, using the 1″ screws, screw it into your little base a couple of times, and then onto the larger platform a few more.
P8112395

Do the same with the other halfpipe on your tallest platform, except you’ll just leave the other end dangling in mid air.

Last piece to install: the great big tube. These are available at any big box hardware store, just look in the section with the cement. Before you screw it into place, you’re going to want to be sure and cut a big hole in it. You’ll need this to get any screws in the middle, but mainly so your cats can have a way in, so be sure to make it big enough for any fat butts you have lying around. Then screw it to the long platform with a couple of 1″ screws in the middle and in each end.
P8062340

Your main structure is now built. Next for the messy part. I went to a couple of pet stores to scope out cat trees and see if there was a neat way to cover them with the carpet. It looks like there isn’t. Everything I saw was pasty and patched, but I can tell you now that my little trio has been at this thing for eight months or so, it will end up looking bald and frayed anyway, so don’t lose to much sleep over this. Just don’t be shy with the staple gun and wood glue and go to town. I started at the top of each piece and worked my way down so I could cover any messy bits as I went. It took a few nights of Arrested Development marathons to finish it, but I’m thrilled with how it turned out.

My favorite part is that this is absolutely not a one person job, so Bear and I were doing the whole thing together and for the most part, this was his first real experience with building something. It is such fun to watch the satisfaction he takes in this, and of course to look at my pristine couches, unmarked by our pack except, of course, by the fur covering every available surface.

This explains things…

P1013346

Maybe this is why it takes me so long to get anything done.

This is what I’ve become.

My new job function – family pillow.

My other Baby Boy

P1013528
Would you look at the size of this tank? Who would’ve thought such a little cross-eyed dummy would turn into this cross-eyed monster?

I’m one of those crazy cat ladies that really believes that our cats are part of our family. Going beyond that, I believe they were sent to us when we needed them. We got our two girls for free back when we were living in New Hampshire and I was completely housebound with endometriosis. They were my little companions and kept me sane when I would go for weeks without speaking to a person in the flesh.

When we first got our new little kitty Lobo, I was actually a little annoyed. These cats are expensive and we could have used that money a million other places. Plus there was the minor issue of expecting a baby. Not exactly the best timing.

It’s turned out that adding this dumb little Lobo to our family couldn’t have been timed better. Every day I’d come back from the NICU aching to hold my baby, so I’d pick up my other fuzzy little guy and he’d let me snuggle him for hours at a time. I’d cradle him like a baby, or lay him on my chest just so I wouldn’t feel quite so wrong all by myself all of a sudden.

P1013493

Now that Atticus is home, the kitties are all a little displaced, but they’re adjusting.
P1013503

Rookie’s been hitting batting practice.

Since I hit about 20 weeks, this kid has not stopped wiggling. It took me a while to figure out what was him and what wasn’t. I was getting so anxious to feel something, I went online to read all the descriptions of what a moving baby is supposed to feel like. I read about bubbles, or taps, or butterflies, or goldfish swimming….none of those rang a bell. To me, when Rookie starts his dance routines, it feels like nothing but the feeling you get right before you have to run to the bathroom with a bout of diarrhea. Sorry. Not a pretty description, I know. Bubbles and butterflies are much more romantic, but truth is truth.

Even though I’m getting my guts beat up from the inside out, for the longest time Bear had zero luck in feeling anything. Finally, FINALLY he managed to be in the right place at the right time and one of Rookie’s kicks managed to land right on his hand a couple weeks ago. Rookie seems to have just grown strong enough to finally make his presence known.

On the same day Bear finally felt the kid move, my brown kitty Cheetara was laying on my belly, sacked out and sleeping soundly. Rookie kicked right where she was sleeping and the little fuzzball jumped about three feet in the air and sprinted to a hiding place. I’m sure that’s nothing compared to what he’s got in store for her when he can manage to grab a handful of fur.

Bear and I are taking off for a last minute trip to Tucson, AZ. I’ve never been there and we don’t know anybody there, so we don’t think we’ll be doing anything very fun. But since the company is sending us we’re taking advantage of the meal per diem and we got reservations at a fancy steakhouse. Oh I can’t wait. All this kid wants to eat is red meat. We’ll be back on Sunday. Have a great weekend!
