2011 Year of Pleasures #24

027
Not one single thing this year has gone the way I planned it. Not one. And with the Africa trip falling through I was twice as bummed because of all the other plans I put off in favor of it. At the top of that list was MaxFunCon. Despite all the great fun I had last year, I didn’t buy tickets because I was going to put it all towards Africa. And then they sold out.

But for once I caught a break and at nearly the last possible second they found room for me and Bear. We just spent three days with all of my favorite internet friends, incredible comedians, some new internet friends like Eden and Maggie, and a superconcentrated dose of inspiration.

My local friends rarely get what I spend so much time doing, if they know about it at all. It is such balm for my soul to be surrounded by people who get my love of the internet and creativity, and will reflect their own passion back to me. If we could just all start a commune together, I think my productivity would quadruple.

BINGO!

For years, YEARS!, I’ve had this idea in mind for a project using a ring with a premade bezel. I searched and searched and came up empty. When I could find one in a jewelry finding catalog it was the wrong size and totally awful looking. Having one custom made was cost prohibitive. I even bought rings and tried to get the stone out, but I just ended up destroying the whole thing.

Then in my weekly perusal of the craft stores….BAM! The very perfect thing. When I found it on the shelf I wanted to run through the aisles of the craft store, hugging everyone I saw.

Now to get to work.

Caramel apple

During my weekend in Sacramento I wandered around town checking off a list of all my favorite things. Coffee shop hot chocolate? Check. Fancy pastries? Check. Independent bookstore? Check. And of course, whenever I’m at a tourist trap I can count on having access to my favorite – caramel apples. The section of Sacramento our hotel was in is totally touristy – I spent one whole morning dodging kids on a field trip – and there were three different candy stores with barrels full of taffy within two blocks. But I let the smell of kettle corn guide me, because I knew that where kettle corn is, a caramel apple can’t be far behind.

New Sheets

A bigger bed means new, bigger, sheets. And I happened to walk into Big Lots when they had all of theirs on super sale. So for less than it would cost to get a cheap set, I got some super high thread count Egyptian cotton fancypants sheets that are just heaven. With that freshly laundered sheet smell.

It is getting harder and harder to get out of bed.

Atti on the new bed

For years I’ve had over there on the sidebar the goal of building a headboard. But as I started making plans, and Atti and the cats kept growing, I realized that I shouldn’t build a headboard until we upgraded to a King sized mattress.

That day finally came and the whole family is overjoyed. I found a crazy crazy good deal, so we went with a really high quality, pillow top, fanciness, and every time I get into it I can’t help but let out a big sigh. The quality of my life has just doubled, I swear.

Atti likes it because it’s great for being tossed onto.

Mother's Day Puzzle

I had a fantastic Mother’s Day this year. Atti and I ended up staying home from church, staying in bed for snuggles and storytime, and then when Bear came home he waited on me hand and foot, cooking anything I wanted and giving me all the time I needed to play with my Mother’s Day present – a new stack of puzzles. Oh why does it have to come only once a year?

Popcorn and Hot Tamales

Bear and I actually went out on a movie date and that means that I get the best treat in the world – hot tamales and popcorn. I pop one of the candies in my mouth and then shove in a whole handful of popcorn and then it’s like a sweet salty spicy treat all in one. I will eat this until I literally make myself sick.

Banana Cream Pie

We got talked into taking an entire banana cream pie home from the BBQ, and I ate it from the pan with a fork like a jerk. Man, it was good.

Sheep Game

Atti’s still on Spring Break and all he wants to do is sit on my lap while I play this silly PC game. It’s one of those games where you try to accomplish all the tasks before time runs out, and this one is on a farm. There are all kinds of silly noises if you do something you’re not supposed to do, if the animals run out of food, if a bear attacks an animal, and Atti thinks it’s the funniest thing he’s ever seen.

When I got him out of bed this morning the first thing he said to me was, “Sheep game?”

I feel like the laziest time waster ever, but then I have to remind myself, I am playing with my son. It might not be blocks and bikes like other kids, but this is what my little guy wants, so this counts.

Mio water flavoring
I am such a child about drinking water. A total baby. It tastes like dirt to me, but I know, oh how I know, all the benefits of drinking it, and all the evils it will save me from in the juice and soda I drink in it’s place.

I’m also really sensitive to any kind of artificial sweetener. Every time a new one comes out people swear to me that you can’t taste a difference, but I can. Every time. So that makes just switching to a diet drink impossible.

I saw a commercial for this stuff on TV and hoped it might be something that could work for me, and I really liked it. There is a little artificial sweetener taste, but since you just squirt it into water, you can control the balance of flavoring and I can make it light enough to not notice the sweetener while also making it heavy enough to not taste the dirt.
