Copper Birds

Earlier this summer I was tooling around a beach town with Karen, my cousin/favorite shopping buddy. We were walking past this shop that was obviously serving a clientele that did not include me. Lots of things you’d see at your grandma’s house, doilies draped without irony or juxtaposition, tapestries, framed shadowboxes of nautical knots, images of cats rendered in every color and medium, and there in the back on the clearance table was this little bird family.

I snapped them up for $1 for the little ones and $2 for the mom and dad bird.

Karen, a beacon of fashion and style, gasped at my luck and pointed out that these birds would fit in perfectly at Anthropolgie or Urban Outfitters, just at 10 times the price.

Lesson learned. Do not turn up your nose at the grandma stores.

It has been SO. Darn. Hot. here over the last couple of weeks. Too hot to cook, too hot to wear clothes you’d be seen in public in, too hot to touch another human.

There are only so many nights that you can scrounge around to make a dinner out of cold cereal and crackers, so we had to do something creative.

Fondue Party

We bought a fondue pot a few weeks ago and this seemed like the perfect time to bust it out. I just love fondue. Nibbles of cheese and carbs is like heaven on a platter to me. When we were first married Bear would throw me a carpet picnic on special occasions. We’d lay on our bellies on the living room rug and stuff our faces with grapes and fancy crackers and little bits of cheese and deli meat. This fondue party made me so nostalgic, and made me promise myself I’d bring back the carpet picnic tradition.

But this eating a solid pound of cheese was pretty great in its own right.

Home from the hospital

Atti did great. Doctor checked him out today and was really pleased with what he saw. For me, it was absolutely grueling and I’m no where near recovered. Sleep. I would really love some sleep.

Bees loving poppies

My garden is in shambles right now. The ranunclus have all died back, the blooms on the hydrangeas have browned, and the glorious poppy tangle is pretty much over.

But I’m still getting the occasional bright red splash, and you can bet money that if there’s a poppy open, there’s going to be a little bee right near by. When the poppies were at their most lush, there were so many bees it looked like flies on something rotten. I think if I ever succeed in getting my little farm with some of my own honeybees, I’m definitely going to need some poppy fields to keep the little guys busy.

Paper Stash

I wish I had a scratch and sniff blog. Because the smell of my studio brings me so much pleasure I’d love to find a way to share it with all of you.

Fabric Stash

I don’t know, some combination of the paper, and the fabric, and the wood furniture…I almost always stop upon entering the room and take a big deep breath. It just smells like possibility to me.

A dream come true…

Dance Party

I’ve never been a baby person, and whenever I would talk with friends about having kids I always used to say that I wish they came out at three years old. That’s when they can talk, and color, and play, and until I had my snuggly little guy, I just never saw the appeal of them any younger.

I have since become a convert to babies, especially little baby necks that just beg for nuzzles, but I am in absolute heaven right now – still trailing the last of babyhood, accepting all my smothering kisses, and yet starting to communicate with the world, starting to play. This is really a spectacular age.

Atticus is just as music obsessed as ever, and the other day when a particularly bouncy song came on I just couldn’t help myself. We spun and bopped and danced around the living room together, Atti laughing like a madman the whole time.

Dancing

This motherhood stuff. It’s pretty great.

Kicking Back

The patio furniture arrived last week, and this weekend it was finally sunny enough to enjoy it.

Whoever started the outdoor couch trend is a hero in my book.

Good Book
All last week was gloomy and rainy and, sure enough, that was also the week that all the new patio furniture arrived. [As an aside – if you’re looking for patio furniture, Overstock.com is awesome and has free shipping.]

I may not have been able to go put the new outdoor couch to work, but the rain is perfect for one thing – curling up under a blanket with a snuggly baby and sticking my nose in a good book.

Beach Cruiser

I spent a day a few weeks ago strolling through the resort town of Balboa Island with my dearest cousin Karen.

I really couldn’t think of a sight that was more Newport Beach than a Paul Frank beach cruiser parked outside a fancy seafood restaurant.

Southern California is such a deeply weird place at times. A place of extremes. The beach bums and the high society matrons are frequently married to each other, the arch conservatives shop at Whole Foods, and this little tiny island, with it’s quaint little houses and old fashioned candy store, has some of the most expensive real estate in America.

Balboa Island

It’s fun to visit, but boy is it a whole different world.

Organized Spice Rack

*we’re trudging along over here, trying to deal. I can’t tell you all how much your support means to me. Especially how seriously you all take it. Sometimes people who aren’t pet lovers just think this kind of reaction is silly, but you all get me. I love you guys.*

For years and years my spice cabinet has been my secret source of shame. I am a hyper organized person. I own a PTouch labelmaker and I’ve had to buy refills. I can not only find the instruction manual for any appliance in the house in ten seconds flat, but I can tell someone else how to find it in fifteen. My idea of a spa retreat is some quality time inside a Staples. If I need a black rubon in a specific font, I can send Bear in my studio to get it for me and he’ll actually come out with it. I’m organized.

But if you cook like I do, spice cabinets are the doctrinal thesis of organization. Not only are there a zillion different bottles, each in different sizes and not easily stackable, but there are also the spices that come in pouches or plastic bags, or the ones I dry from my garden, or random things like bouillon cubes that don’t really go anywhere else. And usually the only convenient place to put them in a kitchen is in that one wonky shaped cabinet above the microwave, frequently also housing vent pipes and electrical cords.

After one too many times opening that cabinet only to have everything fall down on my head, I went on a mad search and I have to say I was really disappointed with the options. Even my beloved Container Store didn’t have the perfect solution. Everyone’s just selling some kind of a caddy that holds 16 spices at best, and they frequently come with the spices included. Bleck.

This little beauty came from Target online and if it was 1″ smaller in width it would have been absolute perfection. It fits the existing bottles, no pouring the store bottles into the ones that fit the caddy, and it uses space brilliantly. Each little tray slides out and down so you can see what you’re dealing with. After a little consolidation and creativity I was able to fit all my spices, seeds, and random baking items inside so now I just have a row of bouillon and salt and pepper next to this neat little box. It wouldn’t fit in my wonky cabinet, but it was just too close to perfect to let go of, so this is now in a cabinet with the dishes. I’ll just have to content myself with that, knowing that I’ll never again have a black eye from a bottle of falling peppercorns.
